Our Home: A Never Ending Project

They say a home is a labor of love. For Adam and I, our home is made of blood, sweat and tears. When we decided to take the leap into home ownership, it was difficult to find a home without getting outbid. We put in multiple offers, wrote letters, but it got to a point where we felt defeated.

One day, we decided to drive around one of the neighborhoods that we liked. There it was, “For Sale by Owner.” sign right in the front of the yard. “What could it hurt?” we asked ourselves. We called the number on the sign and set up a meeting to walk the property with our realtor. We were so excited, as it seemed like our luck was about to change. We had seen a number of HGTV show’s so how bad could it be right?

The day came to walk through the home and let me tell you, it was a sight before my very eyes…The home had been neglected, uncared for and required a TON of repairs (To this day, it still does, but the repairs needed are livable.) It had been like an episode out of, “Hoarders.”

The kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms all needed some major TLC. Boxes, clutter, 90’s paint color choices and a huge GREEN pool. Yes, green like the sludge you find at a swamp. You couldn’t even see at the bottom of the pool!

Something in my head kept telling me, that this was “Our Home” while Adam was still in complete and utter shock. We ran the numbers, spoke to our realtor and after much debate, we decided to put in an offer. Were we crazy? Probably.

After a week, our offer was accepted and the home buying process began. At the same time, we had to game plan how were were going to take on such a big task. We painted the house every weekend till we moved in and we prioritized what was important to us in order to live comfortably. The bathrooms and flooring were the first to take shape. Soon after the kitchen was next.

Buying and renovating home is no easy feat. While I could go on and on about our experience (I'll leave those details for future blog posts) It’s about being open, asking yourself, what you’re comfortable with and looking past what is currently there, because at the end of the day, a home is what you make of it. For us, it’s our never ending project and the home we will have many of our, “firsts.”
